Five reasons your baby does not need a pillow

Unlike what many think, the pillows are not a necessity for newborns and infants. In fact it is recommended that you keep your baby pillow for the first two years after birth. Here are some reasons for it:
It could lead to suffocation: If you think propped on a pillow to sleep will help your baby sleep better, you’re wrong. The head of the delicate baby could sink into the soft pillow that can increase the chances of suffocation. Moreover, the small delicate nose may have pressed the pillow and restricts airflow when your baby moves his head from side to side. Here are eight ways to help the baby to sleep without a pillow.
Increased risk of SIDS: apart from asphyxia, pillow increases the risk of SIDS or sudden death syndrome in numerous ways. If the pillow is filled with foam beads or thermocol, which could come loose accidentally, it could lead to suffocation. Moreover, pillow Horseshoe traditionally used to support the delicate head could restrict the movement of your baby. Here are ten rules for safe sleep you followed.
It could lead to overheating: most stylish children’s pillows have attractive covers which are usually made of fabric than cotton or polyester. This could increase the heat under the head and bring the temperature fluctuations in the body. Sleeves or heat due to excessive sweating could lead to a condition called hyperthermia which is fatal and life threatening.
You could lose your neck: Most infant pillows are soft and not flat. This actually could lose your baby’s neck while sleeping for long hours.
It could lead to flat head syndrome: sleeping on a soft pillow for too long could lead to flat head syndrome in newborns due to constant pressure. While it is important to put your baby on the back to reduce SIDS cases, this can lead to structural deformities in the head while using a pillow to sleep.
Follow these rules for safe sleep:
  • Always do your sleeping on your back and not the chest baby.
  • Avoid using pillows until the age of two years.
  • When you choose a pillow for your child, make sure that the pillow is firm and flat.
  • If the baby’s head is in a particular position for a long time or for more than two hours, try changing the position to prevent flat head syndrome due to pressure.
